Master Scuba Diver Course...

Course Description...

The Master Scuba Diver course is the highest NAUI certification for recreational divers. It is designed for those divers who want to increase their understanding of diving and improve their overall diving abilities. Some subjects are a review and expansion of information covered in other courses, but greater attention to depth and detail is given during this course. The course is an excellent step in the path towards NAUI leadership certifications.

Who Can Take the Course...

This course is open to anyone age 18 and older. (NOT JUST Penn State students and faculty!)

You must be a certified advanced scuba diver with a certification card from a recognized scuba certifying agency.

The nature of scuba diving requires those who participate to be good swimmers. A general ability to swim and good health are required.

What Will I Be Learning...

The course focuses in detail on all aspects of scuba diving in both the academic and open water settings. The open water dives in the course consist of the following in no particular order:

Required Dives:

  • Emergency procedures and rescue
  • Deep/simulated decompressiong diving
  • Limited visibility or night diving
  • Underwater navigation
  • Search and recovery - light salvage

Elective Dives (must do three):

  • Skin diving
  • Review of basic scuba skills
  • Environmental study or survey
  • Air consumption (practical application)
  • Boat diving
  • Shore diving
  • Hunting and collecting
  • Special interest

The academic portion of the course will cover the following topics in no particular order:

  • Applied Sciences: This area will be primarily a review of topics such as physics, physiology, medical aspects, and fitness which were originally introduced in the NAUI Scuba Diver and NAUI Advanced Scuba Diver courses.

  • Diving Equipment: This area will cover scuba equipment and special applications of scuba equipment in greater detail than the NAUI Scuba Diver course.

  • Diving Risks: This area is a review of topics covered in the NAUI Scuba Rescue Diver course along with basic first aid and cpr skills and emergency oxygen first aid.

  • Diving Environment: This area will cover the plant and animal life found underwater along with water movement like waves and tides.

  • Specialty Diving: This is a review and continuation of various skills and techniques originally introduced in the NAUI Advanced Scuba Diver course. Skills include underwater navigation, limited visibility diving, search and recover, light salvage, and deep diving.
