Scuba Rescue Diver Course...Course Description...As divers, particularly in the quarries of central Pennsylvania, we are often diving in situations where there is limited help available in the event of an accident. In most cases, the closest help is your dive buddy. Wouldn't it be great, if you and your dive buddy knew what to do in the event of a diving accident? The Scuba Rescue Diver course provides this necessary knowledge and training so you can manage risks and handle basic in-water problems and diving emergencies. As a strong proponent of safe diving, the Nittany Divers strongly encourage all of their members to take this course and earn this valuable certification. Who Can Take the Course...This course is open to anyone age 18 and older. (NOT JUST Penn State students and faculty!) You must have a current First Aid and CPR certification in order to receive your Scuba Rescue Diver certification, but not to sign up for the course. So you can take the course before you get your First Aid and CPR certifications, but you will not get your Scuba Rescue Diver certification until proper First Aid and CPR certifications have been obtained. You must be a certified scuba diver with a certification card from a recognized scuba certifying agency. The nature of scuba diving requires those who participate to be good swimmers. A general ability to swim and good health are required. How Much Does the Course Cost...The cost of the course is typically partially subsidized by the club and is $70.00 after the subsidy. (Course costs are subject to change without notice.) The cost of the course includes your gear rental, all instructor, and certification fees. It is the student's responsibility to obtain current First Aid and CPR certification before the Scuba Rescue Diver certification is issued. The club typically tries to arrange First Aid and CPR courses in conjunction with this course. See the First Aid / CPR course for more details.
Participation and payment for this course Refunds:There is a $20 NON-REFUNDABLE deposit required to sign up for the course. The remaining cost of the course can be refunded if you do not attend. Once you start the course, no refund will be issued. Where, When, and How Long is the Course...The course is offered twice a year during the spring and second summer semesters. The course consists of three evenings and one weekend day. The first night of the course is a paperwork session when you will obtain your book. The second night of the course is a four hour lecture followed by a two hour pool session on the third night. The weekend day is used to conduct the open water portion of the course and possibly take the written exam. If the written exam is not taken in conjuction with the open water dives, a fourth evening meeting is used to take and review the written exam. When is the next course being offered:
What Will I Be Learning...The academic portion of the course includes a discussion of all the major injuries and ailments that can effect scuba divers and the methods available to treat them. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of injuries both before they happen and afterwards are covered. An emphasis is placed on identifying potential accident situations before they happen and working to avoid accidents. The pool portion of the class is used to review air sharing procedures, dependent and independent out of air procedures, and practice ways of rescueing injured and incapcitated divers. The open water portion of the course focuses on practicing real rescue situations in the open water environment. How Do I Register...To Register for the Course:Consult our list of upcoming courses.
